Helsinki hospital blast: Charges escalate to gross negligence

Helsinki prosecutors have filed charges against the individual who led blasting operations at the Laakso Hospital construction site, following a 2024 explosion that injured two people and sent debris flying over 300 meters. The incident, which occurred on August 9, 2024, has led to charges including aggravated negligent injury, a workplace safety violation, and causing danger.

Prosecutors stated that the case involves gross negligence, a more severe classification than initially investigated by police. The explosion was caused by dynamite charges that had been improperly left in place two months earlier. While efforts were made to remove the explosives, information about the remaining charges was only shared verbally within a limited group, leading to a critical communication breakdown.
