Helsinki Sauna Vandalized, Barbed Wire Found in Water

The popular Sompasauna public sauna in Helsinki has been targeted by vandals, with intruders breaking into its storage facilities and causing damage. The incidents, which occurred between Monday night and Tuesday morning, also included the discovery of sharp barbed wire pieces in the shallow waters near the sauna's beach area.

Erno Iipponen, chairman of the Sompasauna Association, reported that dozens of approximately ten-centimeter-long barbed wire fragments were found in the water, some of which may have caused injuries. "The intention was clearly to harm sauna-goers," Iipponen stated, emphasizing the danger posed to anyone using the waterfront. Volunteers have been actively searching the water with magnets to remove the hazardous material.

In addition to the barbed wire, the vandals stole tools used for the sauna's maintenance, including saws, screwdrivers, and grinders. The Sompasauna Association has filed a criminal complaint with the police and informed the City of Helsinki. While Sompasauna has experienced vandalism in the past, this is the first time such a serious incident has occurred at its current location on Mustikkamaa island. Iipponen lamented the situation, noting that the sauna operates entirely on volunteer efforts and is a cherished, open space for both locals and tourists.
