Hengill Ultra Kicks Off in Iceland with Record International Turnout

Hveragerði, Iceland, is buzzing with activity as the Hengill Ultra, one of the year's largest trail running events, kicked off Friday evening. The challenging 106-kilometer race began at 8 p.m., marking the 15th year this demanding competition has been held.

This year's event has set a new record for international participation, with approximately 300 of the 1,050 registered runners hailing from 38 different countries. The race offers five distance options: 5 km, 10 km, 26 km, 53 km, and the flagship 106 km. The longest distance commenced Friday, while the 53 km race is scheduled for Saturday morning, followed by other distances throughout the day.

Runners can expect Iceland's famously unpredictable weather, with forecasts predicting a mix of wet and fair conditions.
