Heraklion: Fire broke out in low vegetation in Kyparissos late Thursday afternoon

A fire erupted in low vegetation in Kyparissos, Heraklion, Crete, late Thursday afternoon. Firefighting forces mobilized immediately, successfully containing the blaze and preventing its spread. The fire, which started around 8:00 PM, is expected to be fully demarcated soon, according to the coordinating center.

The region is classified as having a very high risk of fire, with winds reaching up to 7 Beaufort contributing to the challenging conditions. Twelve firefighters, supported by a hiking unit from the 3rd EMAK, and four fire engines worked on extinguishing the fire. Three helicopters were also deployed for aerial firefighting efforts, with assistance from the Heraklion municipality's water tankers.

Fortunately, no homes or agricultural/livestock facilities were threatened by the fire. The investigative unit for arson crimes in Heraklion has been mobilized to determine the cause of the incident. This event highlights the ongoing risks faced by the area, particularly during periods of high winds and dry conditions.
