Hertha BSC fan banner covering emergency exit causes brief match delay in Germany

The opening match of the German second division, the 2. Bundesliga, between VfL Bochum and Hertha BSC, experienced a temporary suspension due to a provocative banner unfurled by Hertha supporters. The banner, which read "The relic of the working-class club: We toil, you collect," obscured an emergency exit at Bochum's Ruhrstadion.

In the 13th minute of the game, the stadium announcer for VfL Bochum issued the first warning to the visiting fans, requesting the removal of the banner and indicating that a match interruption was imminent if it remained. Despite the warning, the banner stayed in place.

Following a repeat of the request a few minutes later, referee Wolfgang Haslberger halted the match in the 21st minute. He conferred with the team captains, Timo Horn and Josip Brekalo, before the situation was resolved. Approximately six minutes after the interruption, the Hertha fans rolled up their banner.

This incident was not the first time a fan banner in the away section of the Ruhrstadion has led to a game stoppage. Similar incidents involving supporters from Stuttgart and Mönchengladbach have occurred in the past, highlighting a recurring issue with fan conduct impacting match play.
