Hezbollah, Hamas members attend funeral for Iran's former Supreme Leader Khamenei

Thousands gathered at Tehran's Grand Mosalla religious complex on Saturday, July 4, 2026, to bid farewell to Iran's former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Among the mourners were representatives from Iran-backed groups Hezbollah and Hamas.

The delegations met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi during the funeral procession. Mohammed Fneish, a senior Hezbollah official, conveyed condolences from the group's Secretary-General Naim Qassem for the killing of Khamenei, his family, military commanders, and other officials. Araghchi, in turn, expressed gratitude and reaffirmed Iran's backing for groups aligned with the 'resistance axis'.

Khamenei, who had held the highest authority in Iran since his appointment as Supreme Leader on June 4, 1989, was killed along with family members and officials in a US and Israeli attack on February 28. This event reportedly triggered widespread conflict across the Middle East.

Hezbollah's delegation, led by Fneish, included members of parliament and senior officials. Hamas's delegation was headed by Political Bureau Chair Mohammed Darwish and included other political bureau members. Other notable attendees included Ziyad Al-Nakhalah, leader of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group, and senior members of Yemen's Houthi group.
