Highway CCTV urged to monitor deliberate attempts to spill oil

Malaysia’s government has been urged to install CCTV cameras at strategic points on highways to monitor suspicious activity, including attempts to deliberately spill oil on the road.

Although the incident involving two trailers on the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway recently was an accident, we cannot take the issue of oil spills on the road lightly.

Daniel Khoo, chairman of the Malaysia Crime Prevention Awareness Organisation in Pahang, said the measure would help prevent acts that could endanger road users. He referred to a recent incident involving two trailers on the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway, while stressing that the incident itself was an accident and that investigators would determine its cause.

Khoo said authorities should prepare for the possibility of deliberate spills in the future. Cameras could record someone stopping, leaving a vehicle and pouring oil onto the road, giving police evidence about the person, vehicle and direction of travel.

If someone tries to pour oil onto the road deliberately, we need a system to identify who did it.

He recommended CCTV coverage especially in areas with heavy traffic and locations identified as accident risks. Deliberately spilling oil, he said, would not be mere mischief but an act capable of threatening lives. “Do not wait until someone loses their life before taking action,” he said.
