Historic Fengyuan Post Office Reopens After Extensive Renovation

After an extensive three-and-a-half-year renovation, the historic Fengyuan Post Office in Taichung City, Taiwan, has officially reopened its doors at its original location on Zhongzheng Road. The century-old institution, first established in 1897 as the "Huludun Post and Telecommunications Bureau," celebrated its return with an opening ceremony attended by local officials.

Taichung Post Office Director Chen Le-ming highlighted the significant improvements made during the renovation. Notably, all service counters have been consolidated on the first floor to enhance accessibility, particularly for the aging population and those with mobility challenges, as the original building structure did not allow for elevator installation. This move ensures a more convenient experience for all patrons.

The Fengyuan Post Office boasts a rich history spanning 129 years. Its journey has included multiple name changes and relocations, reflecting administrative and postal system developments in the region. It was renamed "Fengyuan Post Office" in 1949 after the separation of postal and telecommunications services. Following the corporatization of Chunghwa Post in 2003, its name changed to "Fengyuan Zhongzheng Road Post Office." It was merged with Taichung Post Office in 2013 and reverted to "Fengyuan Post Office" the following year based on local suggestions.

From January 16, 2023, the post office temporarily relocated to 66 Fengxi Street to facilitate the renovation work, ensuring continuous service to the community. Chunghwa Post General Manager Jiang Rui-tang emphasized that the post office serves as more than just a postal service provider, offering parcel services and financial transactions, reinforcing its role as a familiar and trusted neighborhood hub.
