Hitler's birthplace in Austria converted into police station

The house in Braunau am Inn, Austria, where Adolf Hitler was born has been transformed into a police station, marking the end of a multi-year renovation project. The conversion officially opens on Wednesday, July 22, 2026.

This significant change in the building's use is intended to deter the persistent interest shown by neo-Nazis in the property, which is situated close to the border with Bavaria. The Austrian government acquired the building in 2016 to prevent its use as a pilgrimage site for far-right sympathizers.

Previously, the house had been a subject of debate regarding its future. Various proposals were considered, including its demolition or repurposing for different community uses. The decision to establish a police presence there aims to neutralize its historical significance as a site of extremist veneration.
