Ho Chi Minh City accelerates procedures for Metro Line 6 connecting Tan Son Nhat Airport to Phu Huu

Ho Chi Minh City is prioritizing the development of Metro Line 6, a crucial ring line intended to enhance urban mobility and connectivity. The project's first phase will establish a direct link between Tan Son Nhat Airport and Phu Huu, a move aimed at improving transportation efficiency within the rapidly growing metropolis.

To expedite the project's planning, the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Management Board is seeking preliminary approval from the Ministry of National Defense. This consultation is necessary due to the proposed route and station locations potentially impacting defense-related land. The board is also adhering to government regulations for detailed technical design and special mechanisms for railway projects.

The proposed route aligns with the city's master plan for development up to 2040 and its vision for 2060. Adjustments to station locations and route segments are being considered to optimize operational efficiency and reduce travel times. The city is simultaneously evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of various route options and coordinating with local authorities to assess the impact on other urban planning projects.

Connectivity with other metro lines is a key consideration, particularly at junctions like Ba Queo and along National Highway 13, to minimize conflicts. The city is exploring multiple options for linking Tan Son Nhat Airport with Long Thanh Airport via urban rail. The most feasible and rapid connection involves integrating with Metro Line 2 and the Thu Thiem-Long Thanh railway.

Ho Chi Minh City is pushing forward with Metro Line 2, with construction slated to begin in early 2026. Concurrently, efforts are underway to finalize plans for Metro Line 6, with a target start date for construction in 2026. This line is designed to connect directly to all three terminals of Tan Son Nhat Airport and will intersect with Metro Line 2 at Ba Queo and the Thu Thiem-Long Thanh railway at Phu Huu, creating a vital transport corridor between the two airports and alleviating pressure on existing infrastructure.
