Ho Chi Minh City begins construction of first underground metro station on Line 2

Ho Chi Minh City has commenced construction on the Pham Van Bach underground station, the first of its kind for the city's Metro Line 2 project, located on Cong Hoa Street. This development signifies the project's official entry into the direct construction phase after a period of preparation.

The construction site at Pham Van Bach station, also known as ST10, is currently focused on building the diaphragm wall. This critical component serves as a protective structure, ensuring safety and facilitating subsequent construction stages. The work involves heavy machinery, including crawler cranes and tunnel boring machines, operated by dozens of workers divided into teams.

Traffic management systems, including barriers and temporary pathways, have been implemented to ensure the safety of workers and maintain smooth traffic flow on Cong Hoa Street, a notoriously busy thoroughfare near Tan Son Nhat International Airport. Despite the high volume of vehicles, the organized traffic diversion has prevented significant, prolonged congestion.

The Pham Van Bach station is designed with a total diaphragm wall length of approximately 534 meters, with construction expected to take about six months. Alongside the Le Thi Rieng station, Pham Van Bach is considered one of the most crucial stations on Metro Line 2. It will serve as the starting point for two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) that will excavate the tunnels for the next phase of the project.

Construction is also underway at the Le Thi Rieng underground station on Cach Mang Thang Tam Street. The project plans to initiate construction simultaneously at the remaining stations along the entire line in July and August, following the completion of traffic diversion and site preparation. Metro Line 2, connecting Ben Thanh and Tham Luong, is a key urban transport project aimed at enhancing public transportation, alleviating road traffic, and promoting transit-oriented urban development.
