Ho Chi Minh City to Widen Key Northwestern Road to 40 Meters, Project Costing Over $137 Million

Ho Chi Minh City is set to undertake a significant infrastructure project to widen the Thới An - Thạnh Xuân inter-ward road in the northwestern part of the city. The nearly 4.5-kilometer route will be expanded to a 40-meter width, with construction scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026. The project, with an estimated cost exceeding 3.5 trillion VND (approximately $137 million USD), aims to enhance connectivity and alleviate traffic congestion in the rapidly developing area.

Currently, the road is narrow and in poor condition, with numerous potholes and heavy truck traffic contributing to dust and safety hazards. Local residents have long awaited the upgrade, expressing hopes for smoother commutes and improved conditions for businesses. "This road has caused many people to fall. If someone is careless and drives fast, they can easily encounter danger. During the rainy season, the road is muddy, and in the dry season, dust fills the air. I hope the road is built soon so people can travel conveniently and make a living," shared one local resident.

The project, managed by the Ho Chi Minh City Project Management Board for Traffic Construction (Ban Giao thông), will impact 471 properties. Of these, 114 cases will require complete demolition and resettlement. The compensation and site clearance process is underway, with the board aiming to finalize compensation plans by the third quarter of 2026 and hand over the land for construction in the fourth quarter.

Beyond widening the main route to six lanes, the project includes building a new Đá Hàn bridge approximately 56 meters long and a 30-meter wide connecting branch road to Lê Thị Riêng street. The upgrade also encompasses the synchronized installation of drainage, lighting, and green infrastructure, adhering to urban road standards. Upon completion, the expanded road is expected to significantly improve the transportation network in northwestern Ho Chi Minh City.
