Holger Rune denies US Open withdrawal rumors, hopes for comeback

Danish tennis star Holger Rune has publicly refuted speculation that he will miss the upcoming US Open. The 23-year-old took to social media platform X to clarify his intentions, stating that conclusions about his withdrawal are premature.

"I can see that conclusions are being drawn that I am withdrawing from the US Open. I have not done so," Rune wrote on X. "I am working hard every day, and as soon as I am ready, I am ready. I hope it will be for the US Open."

Rune has faced multiple postponements of his return to professional tennis following a severe Achilles tendon injury sustained last October. He was previously listed for the current week's tournament in Cincinnati but did not participate.

In a recent appearance on the "Served with Andy Roddick" podcast, Rune mentioned the possibility of his comeback occurring during a Davis Cup match for Denmark. Denmark is scheduled to play Bulgaria on September 18 and 19 in Hillerød. Rune expressed a desire to return in front of his home fans, a statement that has reportedly caused confusion regarding his international comeback plans.

Despite being ranked world No. 99, Rune is expected to receive a "protected ranking" for major tournaments upon his return, allowing him access to Grand Slams and other significant events as he recovers from his injury.
