Hollywood actress Rosamund Pike visits Sri Lanka to mark 1 million landmines cleared

British actress Rosamund Pike is in Sri Lanka to commemorate a significant achievement: the clearance of one million landmines over the past 17 years. The British High Commission confirmed her visit, highlighting its purpose in marking this milestone.

Pike, who serves as an ambassador for MAG (Mines Advisory Group), will spend time with landmine clearance teams during her trip. She is scheduled to visit two areas in the Mannar and Mullaitivu districts that are still affected by landmines. During her visit, she will also meet with Sinhalese and Tamil communities impacted by landmines and participate in a program to educate schoolchildren about the dangers of unexploded ordnance.

The visit underscores Sri Lanka's substantial progress in demining efforts. The British High Commission noted that Pike's presence highlights the country's advancements in becoming a mine-free nation. She is also expected to meet with Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and other officials.

British High Commissioner Andrew Patrick praised Sri Lanka's significant strides towards a mine-free status, commending the Sri Lankan government, demining teams, and international partners. He expressed satisfaction that the United Kingdom could support these efforts.
