Honda's new platform to support gasoline, hybrid, and electric power

Honda is developing a new generation of modular platforms designed to underpin a wide range of its popular models, including the Civic, HR-V, Accord, and CR-V. This flexible architecture will simultaneously accommodate gasoline, hybrid, and battery-electric powertrains, reflecting a more pragmatic approach after a previous misstep in its pure electric strategy.

The company is prioritizing hybrid systems, planning to introduce new e:HEV models with higher efficiency and better fuel economy starting next year. These will target smaller vehicles, while hybrid powertrains for larger cars are also in development. Honda aims to release 15 new-generation hybrid models worldwide by March 2030, signaling a strong commitment to electrification through hybrid technology.

Recent previews include a hybrid sedan prototype, widely believed to be a precursor to the next-generation Accord. This new platform is expected to utilize a more modular structure, significantly reducing manufacturing costs. It will also be approximately 90 kilograms lighter and feature enhanced body rigidity. These improvements aim to optimize tire load distribution during cornering for better grip and overall driving dynamics.

Honda is integrating advanced technologies into the new platform, drawing on its experience with robotic posture control to refine vehicle dynamics for a more stable and comfortable ride. The agile handling assist system will incorporate pitch control technology to improve cornering fluidity, further enhancing the driving experience.
