Honduran Congress Declares San Esteban a City, Recognizing Community Development

The National Congress of Honduras has officially approved a decree elevating the municipality of San Esteban, located in the department of Olancho, to the status of a city. This significant recognition was met with widespread celebration among deputies from various political parties and municipal authorities, who believe it will provide a substantial boost to the region's development.

Óscar Rivera, a deputy from the National Party and the proponent of the decree, emphasized that this elevation is the culmination of decades of hard work and dedication by generations of San Esteban's inhabitants. "This has been an effort of people who for decades have worked for a better municipality and feel proud to receive this recognition," Rivera stated. The current mayor of San Esteban, Miguel Méndez, echoed these sentiments, viewing the declaration as an honor to the history and labor of the community, extending beyond the current administration. He acknowledged that the new status also brings increased responsibility to continue fostering the municipality's growth.

Méndez expressed gratitude for the unanimous support received from the 14 deputies representing Olancho, as well as from other members of Congress. The strategic importance of San Esteban was highlighted by legislators, noting its position on the route connecting Olancho with Colón. This location facilitates access to the port of Trujillo, thereby strengthening regional commercial activities.

Furthermore, Rafael Sarmiento, a deputy from the Libre party, pointed out San Esteban's crucial role as the primary dairy basin in Olancho, attributed to the productive conditions in the Agalta Valley. He affirmed that the municipality has solidified its position as one of the most important centers within the department. Samuel García, a liberal deputy, congratulated the residents and called for prioritizing community development over political differences. Carlos Cano, head of the National Party's bloc, described the decree's approval as a historic moment for Olancho, marking the official designation of one of its 23 municipalities as a city.
