Honduran diaspora demands recognition as strategic partner, not just remittance source

Juan Flores, president of the 15th of September Foundation, is urging Honduras to redefine its relationship with its diaspora, advocating for recognition as a strategic partner in national development rather than merely a conduit for remittances.

Flores pointed to the significant economic contribution of Hondurans abroad, noting that over $104 billion in remittances flowed into the country between 2001 and 2025. In 2025 alone, a staggering 98.5% of these funds originated from the United States, underscoring the nation's heavy reliance on financial support from its citizens living overseas.

"When will Honduras recognize its diaspora as a true ally for national development and not just a source of income for families and the economy?" Flores questioned. He emphasized that protecting Hondurans abroad, strengthening consular services, and defending their rights should be viewed as investments in Honduras's future.

The foundation's president insists that the connection with the diaspora must extend beyond financial transfers. He called for policies that ensure protection, consular attention, and increased opportunities for participation in the country's development for those residing outside Honduras. This shift, he argues, would foster a more robust and inclusive approach to national progress.
