Honduran Liberal Party's ENEE Reform Proposal Excludes Privatization Plan

A Honduran Liberal Party deputy has stated that the party's counterproposal for reforms to the National Electric Energy Company (ENEE) will not include its division into three commercial entities, a key component of the original initiative.

Alfonso Ordóñez, a Liberal Party deputy, emphasized that his party will not support any measure that could pave the way for the privatization of Honduras's electricity sector. He believes that forming stock companies within the reform would jeopardize public administration of energy.

Ordóñez explained that the ENEE has the capacity to recover financially if appropriate measures are implemented and pending resources are managed. He questioned the debts owed by private companies to the ENEE, asserting that their recovery depends on political will. "If there weren't so many donations to the large electric energy companies, I believe the ENEE could be productive enough for itself and the state," he stated.

The deputy defended the idea that the ENEE's recovery is achievable without resorting to privatization processes that would lead to its division. The party's proposal is expected to be presented this week or early next week.
