Honduras registers one more measles case, totaling four imported infections

Honduras has confirmed a fourth case of measles, a 27-year-old woman residing in El Progreso, Yoro. This latest case, like the previous three, was imported, and health authorities have stated there is no evidence of local transmission within the country since 1997. The Secretariat of Health (Sesal) reported that the woman experienced symptoms including fever, cough, loss of appetite, vomiting, headache, and nasal discharge before a body rash appeared.

According to Sesal, the woman had traveled to Guatemala the week before her symptoms began. Identified contacts of the patient are currently under surveillance, and response teams are conducting field investigations and implementing containment measures as per national protocols. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) reports that the Americas have seen 20,521 measles cases and 25 deaths across 16 countries and one territory between epidemiological weeks 1 and 20 of 2026. This figure is four times higher than during the same period in 2025. Mexico leads with 10,920 cases and 13 deaths this year, followed by Guatemala with 6,209 cases and 12 deaths. Other nations reporting cases linked to outbreaks or imports include Bolivia, Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Panama, and Uruguay.
