Honeymoon in Greece Ends in Tragedy: Three Dead in Sifnos Helicopter Crash

A honeymoon trip to the Greek island of Sifnos turned tragic when a private helicopter crashed, killing a young British couple and their pilot. The Bell 206 helicopter went down near the island's helidrome on Monday evening, subsequently catching fire.

Greek fire and rescue services confirmed three fatalities. Initial reports suggesting six deaths were later corrected. The victims included the pilot and the newly married British couple, whose identities have not yet been officially released. The aircraft crashed around 6:17 p.m. local time in the Tholos area, close to the intended landing site.

According to the Greek daily I Kathimerini, the pilot had been employed for only two months. Unconfirmed reports from the scene suggest one of the passengers attempted to exit the helicopter after the crash, but the fire spread rapidly. The crash site is located just thirty meters from the official helidrome and near residential homes.

While the exact cause of the crash remains unknown, witnesses reported hearing a "particularly loud and piercing sound" from the engine area shortly before the incident. An investigation will determine if a sudden technical problem or an error during the landing approach led to the disaster.
