Hong Kong Film 'Godmother' Shi Nansun Dies at 75

Shi Nansun, a towering figure in Hong Kong cinema often called its "godmother," has died at the age of 75. Her film studio confirmed her passing on the evening of July 13, stating she succumbed to multiple organ failure resulting from a bacterial infection. Shi had been dealing with immune system problems since 2022, and her health had not improved.

Her death was met with sorrow from the entertainment industry. Grasshopper lead singer Calvin Choy posted a heartfelt tribute on Facebook, expressing disbelief at her departure and vowing to remember her smile, professionalism, and character. "I will miss you," he wrote.

Born and educated in Hong Kong before studying in England, Shi entered the film industry in the 1970s. In 1984, she partnered with director Tsui Hark to establish Film Workshop. The company became one of the most influential production houses during Hong Kong's celebrated golden era of filmmaking.
