Hong Kong police find insufficient evidence to charge basketball coach over alleged student abuse

Hong Kong police have concluded there is insufficient evidence to charge basketball coach Yung Kam-wah over alleged abuse of students. Yung was arrested in early June following the circulation of an online video depicting a coach slapping a student on a school court. He was initially suspected of common assault.

In a written response, police stated they conducted an in-depth investigation but found insufficient evidence to prosecute anyone. The incident reportedly occurred at Hon Wah College, where the school had previously suspended Yung from coaching duties and offered support to the student involved. The school confirmed the incident took place during the 2023-24 academic year.

Independent reporting suggested a history of abuse by Yung towards pupils at Hon Wah College. Furthermore, two former players from the University of Hong Kong Basketball Club alleged that Yung had also forced them to slap themselves and subjected them to verbal abuse during his tenure as their coach. Yung, a former player for the Hong Kong men's national basketball team, holds positions within the Hong Kong Basketball Association and works as a sports commentator.
