Hong Wang Becomes Third Woman to Win Prestigious Fields Medal

Hong Wang, a mathematician at New York University, has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the third woman to be awarded the Fields Medal, the highest honor in mathematics. The International Mathematical Union announced Wang as one of four recipients of the 2026 Fields Medal on Thursday, recognizing her exceptional contributions to solving the Kakeya conjecture, a complex geometry problem that has challenged mathematicians for approximately 50 years.

The Fields Medal, presented every four years to mathematicians under the age of 40 for outstanding discoveries, also honored Yu Deng of the University of Chicago, John Pardon of Stony Brook University, and Jacob Tsimerman of the University of Toronto. These recipients were acknowledged for making significant breakthroughs across various branches of mathematics. The awards were presented at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Philadelphia.

Wang's award specifically acknowledges her groundbreaking research on the Kakeya conjecture, which explores the minimum space required to rotate a needle to point in all possible directions in three-dimensional space. In collaboration with Joshua Zahl, she successfully proved a precise mathematical relationship between the thickness of tube collections representing needle directions and the minimum space they must occupy. This proof utilized harmonic analysis, a mathematical field focused on decomposing complex shapes and signals into simpler components.

Despite the significance of their findings, Wang and Zahl spent months meticulously reviewing their 127-page proof before publication, with Wang initially concerned about the clarity of the arguments. However, their work received widespread acclaim, cementing its place as a key achievement leading to her Fields Medal. With this recognition, Wang stands alongside Maryam Mirzakhani, the first woman to win the award in 2014, and Maryna Viazovska, who received it in 2022. Since its inception in 1936, the medal has been awarded to only three women, compared to 65 male recipients.
