Hope for Hanover fisherfolk as Lucea Fish Sanctuary opens

Fisherfolk in the Lucea area of Hanover now have a greater chance to foster environmental sustainability following the official inauguration of the Lucea Fish Sanctuary. This new facility, accompanied by an operational office in the Elgin Town area, is set to enhance local fishing prospects while promoting ecological balance.

The establishment of the Lucea Fish Sanctuary marks Jamaica's 20th such protected marine area. Its gazetted boundaries are extensive, extending from the historic molasses shipping pier in Elgin Town eastward to encompass a cove situated opposite the OceanPointe Housing Scheme. This strategic placement aims to safeguard vital marine habitats and support fish populations.

The initiative is expected to provide tangible benefits to the local fishing community, offering a more sustainable approach to resource management. By designating this area as a sanctuary, authorities aim to ensure the long-term health of marine ecosystems, which directly impacts the livelihoods of Hanover's fisherfolk.
