"Hopelessness, despair, and hope" – what "Delfi" experienced at the "Labās mājas" animal shelter

A reporter from Delfi Latvia gained an intimate look into the daily operations and emotional landscape of the "Labās mājas" (Good Homes) animal shelter. The shelter maintains a structured workday, running from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., mirroring many office environments. However, the underlying purpose and the lives it touches are profoundly different from a typical workplace.

"Labās mājas" serves as a temporary refuge for animals that have fallen into misfortune. These animals are in a state of waiting, hoping for their 'lucky ticket' – a chance to find new owners and a permanent home. The reality for some, as the shelter's head points out, is that this wait may never end.

Astrīda Kārkliņa, the head of the "Labās mājas" shelter, shared a stark perspective on the environment. In an interview, she stated, "This is not a home, this is hopelessness."
