Horses and ATVs threaten sea turtle nesting sites on Yucatán beaches

The beaches of Telchac in Yucatán are facing a critical threat to their sea turtle nesting sites due to the intrusion of horses and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs). Local residents and environmental activists have raised alarms about these vehicles and animals entering protected zones, jeopardizing a vulnerable species and a vital ecosystem.

Environmental advocates emphasize that the presence of motorized vehicles and animals in these sensitive areas can cause direct damage to turtle nests and interfere with the crucial reproductive cycle. The nesting season in Yucatán officially runs from April 1 to October 30, during which female turtles come ashore at night to lay their eggs. The hatching period typically occurs between June and September.

Authorities are calling on the public to report any instances of unauthorized vehicle or animal presence in nesting areas to the municipal police. Such activities are subject to penalties under current environmental legislation. Last year, Yucatán's conservation efforts were highly successful, with 11,773 nests and over 1.2 million eggs recorded, leading to the release of more than 724,000 hatchlings.
