Hospital Explains Death of Pregnant Patient Battling Kidney Disease

The management of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Awka, has responded to a controversial narrative circulating on social media regarding the death of patient Mrs. Uche-Chukwudokwe Amarachi. The hospital clarified that Amarachi, who was 14 weeks pregnant, was suffering from kidney disease prior to her passing.

According to the hospital's Public Relations office, Amarachi was initially managed at a private facility for generalized body swelling and breathing difficulties before being transferred to COOUTH. Contrary to claims that she was admitted for "cold and catarrh," hospital records indicate a diagnosis of nephrotic syndrome, characterized by significant anemia, proteinuria, haematuria, and pleural effusion.

COOUTH explained that nephrotic syndrome poses serious risks to both mother and fetus during pregnancy. The medical team advised the patient's husband on the necessity of terminating the pregnancy to save his wife's life. Initially, both the patient and her husband declined this recommendation.

Nephrotic syndrome is a serious kidney condition that can be associated with significant maternal and foetal risks, particularly in a pregnant patient.

Following a blood transfusion that improved her condition and other medical interventions, the patient's health deteriorated, and she lost consciousness. Her husband subsequently consented to the pregnancy termination. Tragically, despite the medical team's preparations, Mrs. Amarachi passed away on the same day before the procedure could be performed.

The hospital management urged the public to verify information before spreading unverified claims that could damage the reputation of the institution and its healthcare professionals. COOUTH reiterated its commitment to best medical practices, ethical standards, and evidence-based healthcare delivery.

The patient was subsequently transfused with three units of blood, following which her blood level improved. She also received other multidisciplinary medical interventions and supportive care as part of the management of her condition. However, the patient’s clinical condition subsequently deteriorated and she eventually lapsed into unconsciousness. The husband then gave consent on the same day for the termination of the pregnancy. The multidisciplinary medical team immediately commenced preparations to carry out the procedure. Sadly, despite these efforts, the patient passed away later that same day, before the termination of pregnancy could be performed.
