Hot weather fills German outdoor pools, potential for record summer

Outdoor pools across North Rhine-Westphalia are bustling with visitors, driven by a spell of hot weather coinciding with the beginning of the summer holidays. The German Society for Bathing (DGfdB) has expressed optimism about the current season, suggesting it has strong potential to be a record-breaking summer, provided the favorable weather persists.

"The success of a season naturally depends heavily on the weather, which is why we have a good chance of a record summer this year," stated DGfdB spokesperson Ann-Christin von Kieter Schmidt. While concrete visitor numbers are still being compiled through the society's annual survey, which recently commenced, the warm June days across Germany already contributed to full pools. The DGfdB noted it was particularly pleasing that the weather in NRW aligned with the start of the summer break, unlike the predominantly rainy holiday period in 2025.

Some pools in NRW, including those in Hagen, Verl, and Porta Westfalica, have faced discussions regarding new entry regulations. These rules primarily affect children and adolescents who lack official swimming badges, potentially barring them from entry. Von Kieter Schmidt acknowledged the debate, noting that while there are arguments for and against such measures, the majority of outdoor pools have not altered their admission conditions. Decisions on entry prices and rules are typically made by the municipalities that operate the facilities.
