Antarctic Expedition: Doctor Lives His Dream Amidst Scarcity

The final orange has been celebrated, and fresh produce is a distant memory at Germany's Neumayer Station III in Antarctica. Expedition doctor Ingo Gerstmann, from Hannover, is part of the 46th overwintering team, which is currently isolated until just before Christmas. The eight-person crew, operated by the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI), arrived in November 2025 and has been alone at the station since February 2026.

With the polar night having set in, the sun only recently reappeared after being hidden since July 23. The team celebrated the sun's return, much like they did the last orange, which was divided among the crew. While temperatures hover around minus 18 degrees Celsius, the lack of wind makes it feel pleasant. However, the deepest recorded temperature was minus 39.6 degrees Celsius, requiring extreme caution for any outdoor activities to prevent frostbite.

Gerstmann, a surgeon and senior physician at Klinikum Neustadt am Rübenberge, had long been drawn to the adventure of Antarctica. Inspired by a book from a former station leader, he decided to pursue the opportunity. His wife and two daughters supported his decision, and he maintains regular contact with them via the station's internet connection, a crucial link for maintaining morale during the extended isolation.
