House of Representatives Passes Special Resolution on Rasuwa Floods

Nepal’s House of Representatives has unanimously passed a special resolution on the floods that struck the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers on Aug. 26.

The disaster affected Timure, Syafrubesi and Betrabati in Rasuwa, as well as Trishuli Bazaar and Devighat in Nuwakot and settlements along the Trishuli River in Dhading, Chitwan and Gorkha. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said 1,114 bodies had been recovered.

The recovered bodies included 41 in Rasuwa, 155 in Nuwakot, 59 in Dhading, 348 in Chitwan, 66 in Gorkha, 38 in Tanahun, 217 in Nawalparasi East and 190 in Nawalparasi West. Another 3,916 people remained missing and 292 were injured, while 11,993 people had been rescued from affected areas.

Prime Minister Balen briefed lawmakers on the situation and the government’s response. He said there was no time to pause simply because the body was tired, and no time to share grief even amid loss.

The resolution followed political party leaders’ addresses in the chamber. Nepal’s National Assembly passed its own resolution on Tuesday, recommending that the government prioritize rescue, relief, rehabilitation and searches for missing people. It also called for free medical treatment for the injured, scientific management of recovered bodies, coordination among all three levels of government and cooperation with communities, civil society, the private sector, development partners and the international community during reconstruction.
