Housing, cars, businesses... Insurers called upon to take exceptional measures amid wildfires

French insurers have committed to extraordinary measures to support those affected by devastating wildfires that have ravaged parts of southwestern France.

Following emergency meetings, insurance companies agreed to cover the relocation expenses for approximately 220,000 individuals forced to evacuate their homes due to the blazes. This assistance will be provided even if residents' primary residences were not directly damaged by the flames. "All French insurers have committed to ensuring that all those who are displaced will have their relocation costs reimbursed according to the terms of the contract, whether their residence is damaged or not," announced Economy Minister Roland Lescure.

These exceptional measures go beyond standard policy terms, which typically only cover relocation if the home itself is affected by fire. The decision reflects the severity of the situation, which has seen tens of thousands of hectares of forest consumed and hundreds of homes destroyed in the Gironde, Landes, and Var regions.

The scale of the destruction has placed immense pressure on insurance providers, who anticipate a significant financial burden from the claims. The commitment aims to provide immediate relief to victims facing displacement and uncertainty.
