How the Tolaram Science Challenge is Transforming Young Minds

For a decade, the Tolaram Science Challenge has been a catalyst for change in Ibeju-Lekki, transforming the educational landscape for young people by fostering ambition, critical thinking, and a passion for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The competition's landmark 10th edition saw Iwerekun Community Senior High School clinch its third consecutive title, underscoring the enduring impact of sustained investment in STEM education.

Sponsored by Lagos Free Zone, the annual competition serves as a vital platform for secondary schools in the Ibeju-Lekki axis. Since its inception in 2016, the Tolaram Science Challenge has evolved into a flagship Corporate Social Responsibility program, offering students a chance to showcase innovative ideas and practical solutions to real-world problems through STEM. This year, 16 schools participated, with students tested on Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, and General Knowledge.

For 10 years, the Tolaram Science Challenge has done more than test students’ knowledge of science by inspiring ambition, nurturing critical thinking and opening doors to new opportunities for young people across Ibeju-Lekki.

Iwerekun Community Senior High School emerged victorious, defeating Magbon-Alade Senior Grammar School in a closely contested final. Ibeju Senior High School secured third place, followed by Community Senior High School in fourth. Beyond the team accolades, individual excellence was also recognized, with Nyong Jebson, Adekunle Ephraim, and Ashikodi Chukwu receiving cash prizes for their outstanding performances. Furthermore, 32 students were awarded Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) scholarships, acknowledging their exceptional achievements throughout the competition.
