How to choose heating that will still make sense a decade from now

Replacing or buying a heating system ranks among the most important investments in a home, yet the decisive choice may not be the device itself. The article argues that households should first choose a supplier able to recommend the right system and support it for the next 10 or 15 years.

With energy prices made unpredictable by geopolitical uncertainty, more households are turning to heat pumps. Air-to-water systems can reduce dependence on fossil fuels such as gas and heating oil. They can also heat and cool a home and provide hot water, while installation usually requires no major building work. The systems can connect to existing radiators and take up relatively little space.

For R. Gobec of Teharje, a heat pump was “a logical solution” because it offered more comfortable, automated heating and avoided the costs and work associated with pellet heating.

The article says buyers should look beyond the quoted purchase price and calculate total cost of ownership. That includes the initial investment, energy use, routine maintenance, possible repairs and the system’s lifespan. A higher upfront cost may prove cheaper over time if it brings lower operating costs, stronger support and fewer unexpected expenses.

Financial incentives can also reduce the initial outlay. Customers installing a Gree Versati heat pump may receive an Eko sklad subsidy of up to €4,500 for residential buildings, or 30% of the value for commercial buildings. The article recommends asking suppliers about system sizing, guarantees, service response times, their own service network, previous projects and long-term support. Atlas Trading says poor choices often become clear only later, after customers have encountered overpriced projects or incorrectly sized systems.
