Hsinchu Recorder Ensemble wins top prize at Dutch international competition

Taiwan's Hsinchu Recorder Ensemble has achieved international acclaim, securing first place in the large ensemble category at the prestigious Open Recorder Days Amsterdam (ORDA) competition held in the Netherlands earlier this month. The ensemble's performance showcased exceptional musicality and artistic expression, bringing international recognition to Taiwan's recorder music community.

ORDA is considered one of the world's most significant international recorder events, attracting top performers, young musicians, and professional ensembles from across the globe. This year's competition featured 97 teams from 31 countries, making the Hsinchu Recorder Ensemble's victory in such a highly competitive field particularly noteworthy.

The Hsinchu Recorder Ensemble is recognized as an outstanding performing arts group in Hsinchu County. For years, the ensemble has been dedicated to promoting recorder art, commissioning new works from composers both domestically and internationally, and actively collaborating with musicians worldwide. Their consistent participation in international music festivals and significant performances has steadily increased their global visibility, establishing them as one of Asia's most representative recorder ensembles.

The 2-year-old Open Recorder Days Amsterdam (ORDA) is the world's most influential international recorder event, gathering top performers, young musicians, and professional ensembles from around the world to compete.

Chen Meng-heng, the artistic director, has been instrumental in nurturing young talent, fostering international exchange, and organizing large-scale performances. By connecting domestic and international artistic resources, he has cultivated a comprehensive environment for recorder education and performance, positioning Taiwan as a key hub for global recorder artistry. The ensemble's success at ORDA is a testament to these ongoing efforts.

In such a fiercely competitive international event with 31 countries and 97 teams competing this year, it is even more commendable that the Hsinchu Recorder Ensemble stood out and took home the championship in the large ensemble category.

Beyond the ensemble's triumph, other Taiwanese participants also garnered recognition. Chen Ke-hsin earned third place in the solo category, while Lin Wen-yu received an honorable mention in the solo category. Additionally, the chamber music group Quadra Noir, comprising Jian Yu-chen, Lin Hsin-chen, Chen Pin-chen, and Huang Shu-yi, also received an honorable mention, demonstrating the broad strength of Taiwanese talent on the international stage.
