HSV advances in DFB-Pokal with win over SC Verl

Hamburger SV secured a comfortable 3-0 victory over third-division side SC Verl to advance to the second round of the DFB-Pokal. The Bundesliga club, playing with black armbands in memory of their long-time investor Klaus-Michael Kühne, found it difficult to establish control in the early stages of the match.

SC Verl, already in their fourth competitive match of the season, posed an early threat. Mika Clausen's long-range shot narrowly missed the HSV goal in the 13th minute, and André Leipold's effort was saved by HSV goalkeeper Sander Tangvik in the 15th.

However, Hamburger SV began to assert dominance midway through the first half. New signing Martin Adeline's close-range shot was saved by Verl's goalkeeper Timo Schlieck in the 40th minute. Moments later, striker Albert Grönbaek capitalized on a defensive error to give HSV the lead just before halftime.

Grönbaek extended HSV's lead immediately after the break, scoring his second goal in the 46th minute. The young talent Louis Lemke, aged 16, then marked his professional debut by scoring HSV's third goal in the 50th minute. The Bundesliga team eased off in the latter stages, with Otto Stange missing a late chance in the 86th minute. SC Verl failed to create significant opportunities after conceding two quick goals.

Hamburger SV's next challenge is a tough away fixture against league runners-up Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga on Saturday evening.
