Huelva wildfire escalates to emergency, forcing village evacuations

A rapidly spreading wildfire in Niebla, Huelva, has forced the evacuation of the villages of Raboconejo and Caballón. The regional government declared the situation an operational phase 1 emergency on Thursday evening, citing the fire's concerning evolution.

Antonio Sanz, the regional minister of the Presidency, Interior, Social Dialogue, and Administrative Simplification, urged the public to exercise caution and strictly adhere to the guidance of emergency services. Key recommendations include closing doors and windows to keep smoke out of homes, maintaining a safe distance from the fire zone, and allowing emergency personnel to work unimpeded.

The fire reportedly originated near kilometer 13 of the HU-3106 highway, which has since been closed. Emergency calls began flooding in around 6:30 PM, with reports of the fire approaching homes in various parts of the province, including Valverde, Beas, Zalamea, and La Granada de Riotinto.

A substantial response is underway, involving 60 ground personnel, multiple fire engines, helicopters, and planes from both regional and national environmental agencies. Heavy machinery, including bulldozers, and a specialized medical unit for forest fires are also on site to combat the blaze.
