Human-caused wildfire near Reno forces 90,000 to evacuate

A rapidly spreading wildfire, identified as the Hawk Fire, is encroaching on Reno, Nevada, prompting authorities to order evacuations for an estimated 90,000 residents. The blaze, which ignited on Saturday in the Peavine Peak area of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, is believed to be human-caused and remains uncontained.

The fire has consumed approximately 53 square kilometers (20 square miles) and is moving through rugged terrain dotted with homes and businesses near the California border. Officials described the fire's movement as exceptionally fast, with changing winds making it difficult for firefighting crews to reach critical areas and for residents to escape. Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo has declared a state of emergency for Washoe County, mobilizing the Nevada National Guard to assist with aerial firefighting efforts and provide security in evacuated neighborhoods. Approximately 800 firefighters are on the scene. Power outages affected nearly 10,000 customers in Washoe County on Sunday, down from 60,000 the previous day.
