Hundreds evacuated from Croatian and Greek resorts as wildfires stretch across Europe

A devastating wildfire swept through a Croatian resort town overnight, resulting in one fatality, 40 injuries, and the evacuation of 1,200 people. The blaze engulfed homes near Omis, a scenic location on Croatia's Dalmatian coast.

Officials reported that the fire turned the night sky red as it spread rapidly. Firefighters battled the flames, and by Friday morning, the situation appeared to have calmed. One charred body was discovered, and seven of the 40 individuals treated at a nearby hospital in Split were reported to be in serious condition.

Across Europe, other regions are facing similar crises. In northern Greece, hundreds were evacuated by boat from the seaside town of Siviri as a fire consumed a nearby forest, sending plumes of smoke into the sky. Over 140 firefighters, supported by aircraft and helicopters, worked to combat the flames, with fishing vessels assisting in the evacuation.

France and England have also reported major fires. In southwest France, a village evacuation was ordered. Meanwhile, Britain and Wales have experienced a record level of wildfires for the second consecutive year, fueled by five heatwaves this summer. Fire chiefs anticipate this year will see a considerable increase in wildfire incidents compared to previous years.

Record-breaking heat and drought, which scientists attribute to climate change, have created tinderbox conditions across the continent. The Balkans region has endured multiple heatwaves, further intensifying the risk and spread of wildfires.
