Hundreds search for missing fisherman, body found using 'cau kieu' method

In Da Nang, Vietnam, a large-scale search operation involving hundreds of locals and authorities culminated in the recovery of a missing fisherman's body. The fisherman, identified as 58-year-old T.M.H. from Thang An commune, disappeared while out fishing at sea in his coracle on August 18.

His coracle was found adrift, prompting concern among locals who then alerted authorities. The search efforts were immediately launched, with local residents and functional forces coordinating their efforts. Despite challenging weather conditions, including heavy rain and large waves, numerous boats and vessels were deployed to scour the sea for any sign of the missing man.

A notable aspect of the search was the use of a traditional fishing technique known as 'cau kieu,' or 'cau vuong.' This method involves dropping numerous weighted, barbless hooks into the sea in an attempt to snag the submerged body. It was through this specialized technique that the fisherman's body was eventually located on the morning of August 19 and brought ashore.

Authorities handed the body over to the family for funeral arrangements. The urgent search was a race against time, compounded by worsening sea conditions and forecasts predicting further deterioration of the weather, highlighting the risks faced by local fishermen.
