Hungarian Athletics Federation Criticizes Club's Exclusion of Top Hammer Thrower

A controversy has erupted in Hungarian athletics as hammer thrower Ármin Szabados, ranked second nationally, has been barred from competing by the host club, Dobó SE. The decision threatens his chances of qualifying for the World Athletics Final scheduled in Budapest.

Géza Scheidler, sports director of the Hungarian Athletics Federation, sharply criticized Dobó SE's decision. He stated that Szabados, who was approaching his personal best, could have improved his standing for the Budapest final if allowed to compete. Szabados currently holds the ninth position among potential qualifiers for the eight-man hammer throw field at the final.

Scheidler believes club interests are overriding national ones. He suggested that Dobó SE might be trying to favor another athlete, Dániel Rába, over Szabados, who represents a different club, Haladás VSE. "This is a typical case where club interest comes before national interest, when it should be the exact opposite," Scheidler stated, emphasizing the irony of this occurring on Hungarian soil.

The federation attempted to intervene, but Scheidler reported hitting a wall in their efforts to persuade the Szombathely-based club to change its decision. The situation has reportedly reached the attention of the state secretary for sports.
