Hungarian chess legend Judit Polgár declines offer to run for president

Judit Polgár, widely regarded as the greatest female chess player in history, has refused an offer from Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar to stand as a candidate for the presidency of Hungary.

In a social media post, Polgár explained her decision, stating, "I do not feel I have the strength to take on the historical responsibility of uniting a divided nation, and for this reason, I cannot accept this invitation." She emphasized her commitment to supporting a future head of state who is independent and respected.

I will do everything in my power to support the new president of the Republic, independent and respected, in fulfilling these objectives.

The proposal for Polgár's candidacy came from the parliamentary group of the ruling Tisza party. However, the nomination faced criticism for not being preceded by broad public consultation, which had been previously promised.

Dear Judit, thank you for everything you have done for Hungary. I believe I can speak on behalf of millions of Hungarians when I say that we will continue to count on you, even if in another role.

Prime Minister Magyar thanked Polgár for her contributions to Hungary's image and development, expressing confidence that Hungarians would continue to count on her, albeit in a different capacity. Polgár, who held the world No. 1 ranking for women for over 26 years and defeated numerous world champions, remains a prominent figure in Hungary. The country is set to elect a new president following the conclusion of Tamás Sulyok's term.
