Hungarian leader Peter Magyar meets with Romania's ethnic Hungarian party president

A significant meeting took place in Budapest between Kelemen Hunor, the leader of Romania's Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR), and Peter Magyar, whose Tisza party secured a decisive victory in Hungary's recent legislative elections. This encounter underscores the enduring ties and shared concerns between the Hungarian diaspora in Romania and the government in Budapest.

As always in recent decades, the RMDSZ (the Hungarian acronym for UDMR, ed.) tries to find a common voice with the Hungarian prime minister and government. I informed Peter Magyar in detail about the challenges facing the Hungarian community in Transylvania, about the activity of the UDMR and the current situation of Romanian politics.

As reported by Adevărul, the discussions focused on the critical issues confronting the Hungarian minority in Transylvania, including their cultural preservation, rights, and the effective functioning of their institutions. Both leaders expressed a commitment to fostering a predictable and sustainable cooperation, aiming to ensure the prosperity and well-being of Hungarians living in Romania.

We have agreed that it is in the common interest to clarify the accusations related to postal voting and that the principles of transparency, efficiency and responsibility should be applied in the plan of politics. The president asked us to find an acceptable solution regarding the eviction of Abbot Fejes Rudolf Anzelm of the Premonstratensian Order from the premises of the Oradea City Hall.

Notably, the meeting also touched upon sensitive political matters. Magyar reportedly urged the UDMR to maintain a neutral stance in Hungary's internal political affairs. Furthermore, the conversation addressed a specific local issue concerning the eviction of an abbot from a property in Oradea, highlighting the complexities of cross-border relations and the role of Hungarian political representation in addressing such matters. The UDMR's commitment to advocating for the restitution of church properties was also reiterated.

We agreed to leave the past behind and established that the Tisza government and the UDMR will cooperate for the survival and development of the Hungarian community in Transylvania.
