Hungarian Used Car Market Hits Record Highs in March

Hungary's used car market has surged to unprecedented levels, with March witnessing a record-breaking 93,900 domestic transactions. This remarkable 14% year-on-year increase, as reported by JóAutók.hu based on DataHouse data, signifies a robust recovery and expansion in the sector.

The surge is attributed to several factors, including the realization of sales delayed by January's harsh winter weather. Furthermore, an 11% rise in new car sales and a seven-year high in used car imports have contributed to the market's dynamism. Vehicles traded in for new purchases are largely feeding back into the domestic used car market, creating a healthy cycle.

Looking at the broader picture, the sustained growth of Hungary's passenger car fleet, now standing at approximately 4.4 million vehicles—a more than one-third increase over the past decade—is a key driver for the used car market. While the current high monthly transaction volume might not be permanent, the underlying trend points towards continued market expansion.

In the first quarter of 2026, 244,500 used cars changed hands domestically, a 4% increase from the previous year. Imported used cars also saw a significant 17% jump to 35,900 units. Volkswagen, Opel, Suzuki, Ford, Toyota, and BMW continue to dominate the domestic market, accounting for nearly half of all transactions. Notably, older vehicles, particularly those manufactured before 2007, remain the backbone of the market, with over 100,000 cars older than 11 years being resold. This trend contributes to the aging of Hungary's vehicle fleet, now averaging 16.5 years.
