Hungary issues stamp marking 500th anniversary of Battle of Mohács

Hungary is commemorating the 500th anniversary of the tragic Battle of Mohács with a special stamp release. The newly issued stamp block serves as a poignant reminder of a pivotal moment in Hungarian history, often referred to as a national tragedy.

The design of the commemorative envelope features a detail from Bertalan Székely's renowned historical painting, "The Discovery of the Body of Louis II." This artwork is considered one of the most powerful depictions of the Mohács event in Hungarian historical memory, centering on the fate of the fallen king.

The postmark on the first-day cover bears the official logo of the "Mohács 500" project, further emphasizing the commemorative nature of the release. The stamp block itself, designed by Balázs Hajnal based on photographs by István Füzi and Gerald Raab, was produced by Pénzjegynyomda Zrt.

This release marks a significant gap in philatelic commemoration, as the Battle of Mohács has rarely been the sole subject of a stamp issue. In Hungary, prior to this 2023 jubilee block, the only stamp block specifically dedicated to the battle was issued in 1976 for its 450th anniversary, also featuring Székely's painting.
