Parliamentary speaker: Hungary survived existential threats by staying true to its identity

Hungarian parliamentary speaker László Kövér emphasized that Hungary, situated in the buffer zone between Eastern and Western empires, has faced seven existential threats by the end of the 20th century, yet has endured each challenge.

Kövér articulated that, depending on the era, Western powers perceived Hungary as either a potential territory to be conquered and exploited for its resources, or as a military staging ground or buffer zone.

He concluded by stating that history has elevated the defeated at the Battle of Mohács to moral victors. While the anti-Christian empire, victorious at Mohács due to its superior force, disappeared from the historical stage within half a millennium, the descendants of those defeated at Mohács have remained Hungarian in their thousand-year-old country.

"May God grant that all of this strengthens us Hungarians in the present and in another five hundred years in our confidence that if we remain steadfast in our Christian faith, and in our love and loyalty to our mother tongue and homeland, then in all circumstances, regardless of historical storms or any intricate conspiracies, the country of Saint Stephen will remain a Hungarian country," he stated.
