Hunting gear guide: how to choose boots and clothing for the season

Wet grass, strong wind and uneven ground quickly reveal whether hunting gear works beyond the fitting room. A jacket’s appearance says little about its performance after several kilometres on difficult terrain.

The guide presents hunting equipment as a complete system. Boots provide stability, clothing layers regulate body temperature, and suitable materials protect against moisture without restricting movement. Fit, breathability, durability and adaptation to the terrain matter more than appearance.

The first choice should be the location. Mountain slopes in the Carpathians bring roots, rocks and steep ground, making ankle support and stability important. In lowland areas, where walks may cover greater distances, lighter equipment and freedom of movement become more valuable.

Activity level also changes the requirements. Walking steadily generates body heat and calls for materials that release moisture. During a long wait, however, staying warm becomes the priority. A jacket that works during active movement may not provide enough protection when someone remains still in an exposed, windy place.

Boots need good grip on mud, loose soil and wet leaves. The heel should stay secure without squeezing the toes, while space at the front helps prevent discomfort on descents. Durable outer materials and a waterproof, breathable membrane can protect feet in wet conditions, but insulation should match the temperature and the activity. Trying boots with the socks intended for use in the field, then breaking them in before a long trip, can reveal pressure points early.
