Hurricane Lala approaches Hawaii, bringing heavy rain and causing disruptions

Hurricane Lala is bearing down on Hawaii, intensifying from a tropical storm over the Pacific as it nears the island chain. The U.S. Hurricane Center classified Lala as a Category 1 hurricane on Saturday morning, with sustained winds reaching 120 kilometers per hour.

The storm's eyewall, containing the strongest winds, is expected to pass over or near the southern tip of the Big Island, Hawaii's largest island, throughout Saturday. While it is not yet certain if Lala will make landfall as a hurricane, its outer bands have already caused significant disruptions.

Heavy rain and strong gusts have led to localized flooding on the Big Island. Trees have toppled, blocking roads, and power outages have affected over 9,700 customers. More than 130 people have sought refuge in emergency shelters. The mayor of Hawaii County warned that the worst impacts are anticipated between noon and early afternoon.

Transportation services on the Big Island have been suspended, and parks and beaches closed. Flights to and from Hilo and Kona airports have been canceled or altered. Forecasters predict substantial rainfall, potentially up to 50 centimeters in some areas, raising concerns about life-threatening flash floods and landslides. A storm surge is also expected along the east coast of the island. Warnings are in effect for other islands, including Maui, Oahu, and Kauai, anticipating tropical storm conditions with heavy rain and potential flooding.
