Hurricanes Karina, Lowell and Marie line up in the Pacific as Mexico’s cyclone season peaks

Three hurricanes, Karina, Lowell and Marie, are active at the same time across the Pacific, putting unusual attention on the region’s weather patterns.

Lowell strengthened into a Category 5 “superstorm” 445 miles south of Hawaii on Thursday. Karina, a Category 3 hurricane, was located east of the islands. Marie, a Category 1 hurricane, was tracking through the Mexican Pacific, according to the National Water Commission’s forecast for Sept. 3.

Marie was expected to bring intense rain to Baja California Sur that night, along with very heavy rainfall in 10 other Mexican states. The article links the rare simultaneous activity to the evolution of El Niño, a natural climate phenomenon associated with unusually warm Pacific surface waters.

The World Meteorological Organization has warned that El Niño could intensify sharply and become the strongest ever recorded, with effects potentially lasting until February 2027. A weather commentator also said another storm, Norbert, could appear the following week.

Mexico’s hurricane and cyclone season is currently in its most active period. It began on May 15 in the Pacific and June 1 in the Atlantic, and the National Meteorological Service forecasts that it will end on Nov. 30 in both regions.
