Husband of Italian Family Minister found dead in lake near Rome

The body of Luigi Cavallari, the 84-year-old husband of Italian Family Minister Eugenia Roccella, has been recovered from Lake Vico, north of Rome. His disappearance on June 27, while swimming in the lake, triggered an intensive five-week search operation.

Divers discovered Cavallari's remains at a depth of 18 meters, approximately one kilometer from where he was last seen. Authorities believe the retired engineer and university professor likely suffered a medical emergency while attempting to cool off during Italy's intense summer heat. The search was continuous, employing divers and water robots to scour the lake.

Cavallari had been married to Minister Roccella for over 50 years and was the father of two sons. Roccella, a member of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's Brothers of Italy party, is known for her conservative stances on family policy, abortion, and social issues.
