Husband who beat migrant wife with wooden stick gets 5-year sentence request in appeal

Prosecutors are seeking a five-year prison sentence for a man accused of severely injuring his wife, who had migrated to Korea for marriage. The man allegedly assaulted his wife with a wooden stick and other objects, breaking all the bones in her fingers.

During the appellate court hearing, prosecutors requested the court to reject the defendant's appeal and uphold the original sentencing request of five years. The defense argued that the defendant was under significant emotional distress due to two previous wives fleeing and that his actions were impulsive, driven by fear of his current wife leaving him. They also highlighted his remorse, criminal deposit for the victim, and a settlement reached during the appeal.

He was worried that the victim would run away again this time and asked for her passport, but she did not comply, so he became angry and committed the crime impulsively.

The defendant, identified as Mr. A, expressed deep remorse and apologized profusely to his wife, Ms. B, stating, "I have committed a great sin, and I am a sinner." The court is scheduled to announce its decision on September 9th. In the initial trial, Mr. A was sentenced to one year and ten months, but both the prosecution and the defense appealed the verdict.
